PROJECT PROPOSAL & STATEMENT

I was amazed that shoes were the main source of Flotsam Jetsam on the beaches of two popular surf destinations in El Salvador so I gathered 1,000 of them to ship back to L.A. in order to build 'Shoe Canoe.' The canoe will be modeled after the original form of local ocean transportation referred to as Ti'ats or Tomols, the Tongva plank canoes, and will then be used to cross the channel from Catalina Island to Cabrillo Beach, a journey of approximately 22 miles. The crossing is projected to occur in spring 2010, in costumes made of shoes with oars made of shoes.

The shoes are currently being photographed and named for the publication of a consumer-style catalogue that will document the shoes before they are destroyed in the construction of the canoe. The shoes, like high-end fashion lines, are categorized under container and oil shipping lines and then named after actual ships.

Thanks to Ron Stewart, the photographer of Shoe Canoe, Supercommute, and the lightbox series.
